Chelsea orange and arid
Monday, 30 May 2016

The Chelsea Flower Show this year was dominated by an arid look. Desert, gravelly, dry and hot. And the geum plant appeared in 5

An Italian garden in Clapham
Sunday, 22 May 2016
by caroline
Italian garden in Clapham This was a hard landscaped garden which was not only uncared for but also had suffered the rigours of an Alsatian puppy’s activities throughout the Spring! It was really looking more like a back yard! The owner wanted to transform it into a lighter, more private and welcoming space – in

This garden really only needed a facelift, but it had to be done in a sympathetic way to fit the beautiful York paving already in place and the high brick wall at the end of the garden. We built the right hand side wall and the raised beds at the front of the garden making

A shrub for January – Gorse!

I had been thinking all this month about what should be my January shrub and hadn’t come to any conclusions, leaving it rather late and then I was in Suffolk this week-end on the Heritage Coast near Dunwich and saw this spectacular display of gorse – with its fabulous fragrance. This is a wonderful and

With acknowledgement to my dear friend Alexandra Campbell her recent blog http://www.themiddlesizedgarden.co.uk/9-things-to-do-differently-in-the-garden-this-year/ has drawn attention to the use of black paint in gardens which I have been using in my garden designs for some time now and here below are some pictures which might show you the ‘power of black’. If you have an old fence which

This is a very small narrow garden which is seen from the owners’ flat above and is reached by a narrow passage running along side the house. At the back of the garden is a church with pretty windows. The owners wanted a light, contemporary and easy to maintain garden. I thought if

Cottage gardening – not as easy as it looks
Friday, 14 August 2015

The whole essence of a cottage garden is its wild and natural look. So natural that it seems as though it has been untouched by human hand..it has grown out of untended ground with little help from anyone but not so!! Most cottage gardens take quite a lot of trouble. Where do the plants come

Caroline’s vintage garden in Wandsworth

My garden in Wandsworth is not really a very good example of my garden design as it has evolved over 20 years with almost zero input from me! It is almost a classic case of the “cobbler’s shoes”. However it has also had an unbelievable bashing in the last 9 months as my son, Freddie,

Caroline Garland’s Chelsea…magentas, carmines, oranges and verbascums gone mad!

I had quite a rushed trip to the Chelsea Flower Show this year, and I think I could recommend this approach! I had to concentrate my mind and find the essentials. There were, without doubt, some beautiful gardens, clever ideas and stunning builds and anyway who am I to sit here at my computer and
