This garden was a bit of a mess to say the least and the young professional couple, with one small baby girl, wanted something simple but effective designed for their garden. Their main requirements were good fencing as they are very overlooked, as much lawn as we could possibly give them, very low maintenance so perennials were out of the question and a small barbeque/seating area at the end of the garden to catch the evening sun. This is what we came up with:
Normally speaking my gardens are built by my husband, Peter Garland, Townscapes, but in this instance we used Garden Gurus in Wimbledon who were excellent and followed my design exactly – always very pleasing! The far right corner needed a tree that was eventually going to do a good “masking” job as there are some steps on the house beyond where the owner likes to sit and survey his view, which unfortunately was pretty much my clients’ garden! We put in a standard magnolia which is perfect as it is evergreen and is very pretty. This is incorporated into a bench which also doubles as storage for childrens’ small toys, BBQ bits and pieces and possibly even a trowel, although there will be little gardening to do in this garden.
We planted lavenders, buxus balls and bamboos and the client is going to have a think about what “fillers” they want to put in. There is also a very pretty little Acer just to give a bit of Spring, Summer and Autumn colour and some climbers for the fencing, but this garden is simplicity in its purest sense so we have kept it as uncluttered as possible.
