When we were asked to design the areas around the tennis courts at the Magdalen Tennis Club, Wandsworth, the hard landscaping was in a terrible state. There was very unattractive tarmac covering the entrance and reception areas and at the back there were ugly, square, cracked concrete paving slabs all unlevel, because they were sitting on an insubstantial base. There were one or two “woody” shrubs and a lot of overgrown ramblers and messy looking plants. Our remit was to smarten the whole area up incorporating flower beds with soft evergreen planting and new paving. We chose middle of the range paving, Kashmir Grey from Silverlands, as the area was quite large and the budget not enormous. This sandstone is perfectly good looking and durable for a public space but might not be a first choice for a private more elegant space. We built new steps and entrance “piers” and incorporated new lighting.
