Amelanchier lamarckii as described by Caroline Garland

by caroline / Tuesday, 29 October 2013 / Published in Caroline's favourite flowers

Amelanchier lamarckii or Snowy mespilus or Juneberry

Family: Rosaceae

Amelanchier are small erect deciduous trees or quite large shrubs with an open habit and showy white flowers in early spring.. They have red to purple fruits and have bronze-tinged young leaves turning orange and red in autumn.  It is elegant and delicate.

It grows eventually (10 – 20 years) to 8-10 metres and will spread anything up to 8 metres. It can tolerate full sun to partial shade and will grow well in most aspects and soils:  north-facing, east-facing, south-facing or west-facing.  Sheltered or exposed.  However the best autumn colour is achieved by growing it in full sun.  It is low maintenance and really lovely.

Best trees: Amelanchier lamarckii (snowy mespilus) has something special each season, and birds love the fruit.

It has something for every season and is one of the Daily Telegraph’s Best 20 Trees for the Garden.
