Erysimum ‘Bowles Mauve’ or Wallflower ‘Bowles Mauve’
Family: Brassicaceae
Erysimum ‘Bowles’s Mauve’ is a plant that every garden should have. It manages to flower almost all year long apart from in the depths of winter. It is every gardener’s dream as it fills and flowers and looks happy and grows and does everything you want it to. It is not fabulously beautiful in its own right but it is fabulously useful and will never let you down.
It is a vigorous subshrub (evergreen perennial) reaching 75cm (21/2ft) in height with a spread of 60cm (2 ft), has glaucous foliage and mauve flowers that lend it to many planting combinations. Given a good sunny aspect with well-drained soil it will reward you with months of continual flowering, and attract a whole host of insects.
It likes full sun and will survive in most soils, but can do with a bit of frost protection in a really cold winter, so perhaps a slightly sheltered bed would suit it best.
