This is a “day out in Norfolk” that you should not miss! In the house you will see Murillo, Poussin, Rembrandt, Rubens, Van Dyck and Velazquez hung in their original positions in Sir Robert Walpole’s magnificent house and in the garden you will see Julian and Isabel Bannerman’s intriguing designs. They have been designing gardens and garden buildings together since 1983. They strive to create places which work for living in. Their response to a given site is founded upon observation of what they find, trying to see a different level, informed by a lifetime of fascination with the natural world and the history of human intervention in that world. Not only passionate about plants and gardens, but also built structures and the wider landscape, be it urban or suburban, agricultural, wetland or woodland, they try to use the simplest and most familiar materials. They have also benefitted from the patronage of Prince Charles who has many of their influences in his gardens at Highgrove. They are not to everyone’s taste but they are certainly interesting!
